Being Materialistic

If I ask you to choose whether you are materialistic or not, your answer would most probably be “Of course I am not !”. Well, I also used to think the same way. I am not materialistic. No way !

It was back in late December and I returning from office. It was past 10 pm and was a very typical cold night - the kind of cold that cuts through your thick layers of clothes and manages to reach your bones. The situation was even worse because I was riding my scooter. I was shivering and hoping to reach home soon and drink something hot. I study and work as well. My classes start in the morning at 7am and goes on till 1pm and work starts from 2pm to 10 pm.  So that day I left home at around 6:45am after having a cup of tea and some biscuits, ate some shitty canteen food in break time around 10 am and went straight to office. Then I worked like a donkey (literally). It was a very exhausting day and when I was returning from work in my scooter, a couple of stray dogs came out of nowhere and started barking and chasing me. I was startled because they came suddenly and was about to lose control. The condition of road was also bad that you could fall down anytime and anywhere. Luckily I managed to control and avoided some major accident. The dogs then ran away. I took a deep breath and stopped there for like a minute until I could be totally calm.

At that moment and through the whole ride back home, I was wishing I had a better life than this. I was feeling jealous of all the people who were sitting cosily inside their warm bed in thick quilts while I had to ride through the cold and on top of that nearly had an accident because of stupid dogs ! I felt jealous of all the folks who didn't have to work. I wished I didn't have to work like this at odd hours in the cold. I wished I could afford a car so that I could at least protect myself from cold and situations like this even if I had to work odd hours. I wished I was rich or born to very rich parents ! I wished I was better off.

I am the type of person who loves what he's got and like being independent (at least financially) but that night got me really materialistic. I could hardly sleep that night because my mind was full of chaos and materialistic thoughts.

If I think of the situation now, well, it was (and still is), my choice to work and study because I wanted to be able to pay my fees on my own and not be a burden to my parents or anyone. It was a well thought decision from my side. That night was one of the worst of times and it passed. I was back being normal after a few days as well. Those were the hardships that I had to go through in order to have a satisfaction of being independent. They say life is a compromise and I was compromising my comforts of warm bed, time for enjoyment and a regular life, and it's fine and I have made my peace with the situation as well. I hope that one day all these hard work pays off :).

Experiencing Something Beautiful

Date: March 16, 2014 (Sunday)

Place: Open Terrace Cafe, Miramar Mall, Taipei

I was on an official business trip to Taiwan from Bangalore. The week was hectic but the weekend was fun. I had travelled many places nearby Taipei City the day earlier and roamed around the city on Sunday as well. I returned to my hotel around 6 pm and went out for dinner. After having dinner, I just wanted to sit, relax and listen to some live music being played on the open terrace cafe on Miramar Mall. This cafe had become my favourite place to sit and relax in the evening. They had great coffee and great live music. I had always enjoyed live music no matter the language. The music being played was a mix of a few English and more Chinese songs but I enjoyed them equally. The environment was lively and people were enjoying their food and drinks with their friends and family. The locals of Taipei has this "relaxed" attitude which I liked very much. Although being a fast growing metropolis, the life around the weekend was slow, smooth and quite enjoyable.
I reached the cafe around 7:30 pm, ordered a cup of latte and sat in a chair, a little to the back but in a direct line of sight with the stage where live music was being played. The singer sang mostly Chinese songs that day but she had a great voice and the band was awesome. I was enjoying every sip of my latte and the music.
After sometime, I noticed a group of people, around 8-10 in number. They came and went straight to the counter and were talking to the waitress. From their activity, I guessed that they may be planning something like birthday or anniversary. They arranged the tables and chairs and the waitress cleared some tables from the front row. Then they disappeared from there which was kinda odd but the music again grabbed my attention and I started enjoying the music.
Around 8 pm, a couple came and sat in the table just in front of me. They ordered something and they were holding hands - enjoying the music. The guy was telling something to the girl and she was laughing the whole time. The situation was pretty adorable. The singer came forward and asked something to another group sitting just in front of the stage. I guess she might have asked for a song choice because when she went back to the stage and started singing, the group sitting in the front welcomed the song the song with a loud clap. This song was slow and the music was a little bit romantic. The couple in front of me were enjoying this song quietly without talking. The song finished and so did my coffee. I called the waitress and ordered another latte.
The singer came forward once again from the stage and was telling something in the mic. The band was playing slow romantic music and she arrived near to the couple in front of me. She was telling something to them and so both of them stood up, listening to her. Then something magical happened. The guy turned to his right and looking at the girl, he kneeled down. He took out a small jewellery box and popped the ring in front of the girl. Everyone started clicking pictures so I also took out my cellphone and took a photograph. The girl was completely speechless and looked kinda surprised and happy at the same time. The singer announced something and everyone stood up and were looking at them. I also stood up and noticed that the girl was crying already. She looked very happy and even though her mouth was closed I could observe that she was smiling. She just nodded her head up and down and everyone around clapped. He put the ring on her and gave her a very tight hug for some seconds. Everyone started shouting and then the group which had disappeared earlier, returned with a champagne and balloons. Everyone started shouting and hugging the couple saying congratulations.

That was something really beautiful that I was lucky to experience. I had never seen a real proposal before this and haven't seen any afterwards as well. The environment and the celebrations that followed was amazing. Proposals like this are rare in Nepal and the whole South Asian region. Their friends had already surrounded them. I also said congratulations when the guy was looking at my direction. He nodded and I took the last sip of latte. As I walked out of there, I was very glad that I just saw a real proposal.
I hope that they are happily married and having the best time of their lives now.

What's the best love song ever written ?

Sometimes I wonder
What's the best love song ever written ?
The best love song is not yet written, I'd realize !
And I doubt it will ever be.

For me the best love song is
The music of butterflies that you feel,
The music of heart beats racing slowly,
The music of the laughter,
And the sound of silence when together.

The music of your fingers tapping the screen during the chats,
The music of sighs when she falls in your arms,
The music of her breaths as she comes close,
The music of trembling lips when having important conversations,
The music of the flow of 'happy hormones',
The music of surprises,
The music of anxiety,
The music of relief.

The best love song is
The music of everyday love
That you feel yet cannot write
The best love song is hence, not written, nor it would ever be.

Little Joys

To the people who ask me,
How to stay happy ?
I often tell,

Look for Little Joys !

The Dance of Fireflies,
The Sound of Rain,
Sunsets on a Beach,
Smell of your Mom's Dishes,
Children's Laughter !

Little did I know
My little joys lies in you !
Your Stupid Laughter,
Your Long Talks,
Your Angry Looks.
Your Shining Eyes,
And your Happy Face !

So if anyone would ask me,
How to stay happy ?
I would still tell,
Look for little joys !

I have found my little joys,
Hope you find yours too soon.
And I wish to become her little joys someday !

Mini Tales : Morning Sessions !

The alarm clock rang. He opened his eyes and saw that it's 7am. After stopping the alarm he said "Wake up beautiful! It's already 7, you will be late for work".
He turned to other side and then thought with a heavy heart, "Damn these Habits!
You left me. But your memories haven't!"

While pouring the coffee, her sad eyes read the line printed in the cup,"Best husband ever!"
She always hated coffee, she hates it even now.
It's smell of the coffee that makes her forget that he's actually gone ! Even if it's for a very brief moment, she's happy !

Metaphor

Her weary eyes tell the untold
Heavy heart,
Anxious mind,
Sleepless nights,
Haunting dreams !

Her messy hair expresses the unexpressed

Lost hopes,
Never found love,
Unhealed wounds,
Unfulfilled desires !

The light smile on her lips, however tells
Lightened senses,
Sunrises and Hopes,
Colorful dreams,
Love !

She is a metaphor
A beautiful mess,
An imperfect perfection,
A loving friend !
Just the way he liked !

Solitude

Amidst the woods,
Lovely lonely deserted wooden steps,
The sound of my sole touching them,
As I walk,
Loud and clear!
Noone around,
Sounds of birds, insects and some animals,
In a distance,
Cup of hot coffee to sip,
As I walk, breathe and feel,
Peace!
Bliss!
Solitude!

Place: Fuyang Eco Park, Taipei.
Amidst the rush, hustle and bustle of the city, this place chose to remain utterly calm and peaceful providing a soothing effect to the travellers.
